Do you know what is meant by aromatic reds?
Red aromatic vines represent a fascinating category in the world of wine, distinguished by their intense and characteristic olfactory profile. These vines are capable of producing wines with a complex and seductive aromatic range.
Among the most important we find Ruché , Lacrima di Morro d'Alba and Schiava . These grapes not only embody the richness and diversity of our country's wine heritage, but also represent living testimonies of regional traditions.
Considering the aromas of a wine, there are various types of grape varieties, commonly classified as Aromatic, Semi-aromatic and Neutral. This classification leads to remarkably different wines: some are immediately recognizable on the nose, while others are more complex to identify at first impact.
Let's take the Ruché for example, it is produced with the DOCG denomination, giving rise to special variations such as theRuché "Prevost" of Caldera , a label that best expresses the complexity and elegance of the grapes with broad and rich aromatic notes, as well as on a balanced palate, fresh and with very soft tannins.

But what makes an aromatic red grape variety distinctive?
Ruché, a Piedmontese red grape variety originating from the Castagnole Monferrato area, in the province of Asti, is particularly appreciated for its distinctive aromatic profile. This is characterized by a complexity of aromas that can include floral notes of rose and violet, fruity notes of cherry and berries, and sometimes, light spices.
Despite its charm and qualities, it remains a little-known grape variety, helping to maintain a certain exclusivity of the wine produced. Production has grown in quality over the years, with vignerons who have invested in enhancing the variety through sustainable agricultural practices and careful winemaking techniques, aimed at enhancing the aromatic peculiarities and taste profile of the wine. An example is Caldera, with its most famous wine, theRuché di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG “Prevost” .
This label stands out for a palate of excellent structure, with soft tannins and a balanced acidity which guarantees freshness and longevity. It is a wine that can be appreciated young, to grasp its freshness and aromatic intensity, but which also has excellent aging capabilities, during which its aromas evolve towards more complex notes and spicy nuances.
What to pair with an aromatic red wine like this?
Certainly the dishes of Piedmontese cuisine, such as agnolotti del plin, roast or braised meats. Its versatility also makes it suitable for more daring culinary experiments, capable of enhancing its aromatic richness.

Another noteworthy grape is Lacrima di Morro d'Alba, grown in the Marche region, precisely in the municipality of Morro d'Alba. The name may derive from the grape's tendency to "tear" when it reaches full maturity, or from the elongated shape of the berries that resembles a teardrop.
This native vine stands out for its limited production and the intensely aromatic wines it produces, which stand out for their unique personality in the Italian wine scene.
Colonnara's Lacrima di Morro d'Alba DOC splendidly represents this vine, best expressing its aromatic qualities with intense aromas of ripe red fruit such as cherries and strawberries, enriched by floral notes of rose and violet, and sometimes by accents of aromatic herbs and spices.
Thanks to its distinctive aroma, the wine is immediately recognizable and appreciated. With its richness of aromas and elegance, it is perfect both as a meditation wine and accompanied with cheese-based meals or fruit-based desserts.

We conclude with Schiava, which, although not classified as an aromatic grape, has a distinctive and fragrant profile. This characteristic makes it unique in the panorama of red vines, offering a tasting experience characterized by an aroma that stands out for elegance and subtlety, rather than for intensity and complexity.
It is a traditional grape variety from Trentino-Alto Adige/SĂĽdtirol, known for its ability to produce light, fruity and easily drinkable wines that reflect the characteristics of the Alpine terroir.
An emblematic example is the Alto Adige Santa Maddalena DOC by H.Lun , which best expresses the aroma of Schiava through delicate bouquets of fresh red fruits, such as cherries, raspberries and strawberries. These aromas are often the olfactory protagonists, giving the nose lively and captivating sensations.
La Schiava demonstrates that aromaticity in red wines can manifest itself in subtle but distinctive ways, offering a light, fragrant alternative to fuller-bodied, tannic red wines.
